There’s truly no place like home, especially during the holidays. It’s a truth that resonated deeply in Kent County as 36 children found their forever homes. Among them, Michael Orlando Clark Jr. had a special moment when he invited his entire kindergarten class to attend his adoption hearing. Picture the scene: a courtroom full of smiling little faces, all there to support their friend.
Incredible Class Support
Michael
Michael had wanted to share this special moment with his classmates. Early in the school year, his teacher had said, “Family is more than DNA. Family is support and love.” Each student stood before the judge, explaining why they were there. “Michael is my best friend,” said Steven, a classmate.
The courtroom was filled with joy as Michael and his new parents banged the gavel, making the adoption official. Judge Patricia Gardner noted the significance of the moment: “These children’s journeys have often been long, including miracles and incredible changes through community support.” She also acknowledged the presence of Michael’s entire class, saying they will always be there for him, today and in the years to come.
Thursday marked the 23rd annual Kent County Adoption Day, hosted by the Family Division of the Circuit Court. Judges Deborah L. McNabb, TJ Ackert, Christina Elmore, Kathleen A. Feeney, Patricia D. Gardner and Patrick Hillary each presided over the hearings. Each family was given a half-hour to celebrate this new milestone in their lives with their loved ones.
Holiday Magic in Court
The day would not have been complete without a special visit. Santa Claus took time out of his busy schedule to greet each family and child. Additionally, various local organizations like the Adoptive Family Support Network and the Post-Adoption Resource Center participated in this special event. Even the Kent County Sheriff’s Office Canine Unit made an appearance!
